Project 1: Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street
In this assignment, we are required to conduct a site visit and research one of the heritage streets. We need to analyze the tangible and intangible elements of the street and how they influence society. We need to translate our findings into sketches on A4 paper.
This assignment really create an eye opening for me because it help me appreciate more how valuable the ancient elements are and how people provide full commitment to preserve it. My street that i had choosed was Jalan Tun Hs Lee, i really thankful towards this project because previously i did not notice this street eventhough i went a few times in that area due to the modern ubanisation surround it. The street ike a hidden gem where only people who appreciate it only can notice it. It bring me back to childhood era where i can still feel the old environment of the society the live together and practice traditional elements. I wish i could explore more indepth about that street and feel the atmosphere more.
Project 2: Poster and Seminar - Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture
This assignment requires us to develop our research on the issues occurring on the street within the scope of architecture. In one group of 6-7, we need to decide on a street and then conduct an in-depth research on the issues happening there, such as architecture and place identity, adaptive reuse of traditional architecture, or sustainable heritage tourism. Then, we need to create a proposal, poster, and video about the information we gained from this research.
This assignment provided various information and awareness to me on how valuable the ancient elements are and how people are struggling to preserve them to ensure they do not become extinct due to modernization. I found that people use various creative ideas to preserve and make traditional elements stand out again, such as reusing old traditional buildings as service centers where people can still engage in modern activities while appreciating the traditional elements and influences around them. It also enhanced my critical thinking on how to tackle the issues and make them stand out again so people can benefit from them. Overall, both of these assignments have greatly helped me understand and appreciate old history, especially in the Asian region.
